Picture Books Come to Life for Kids with Learning Disabilities and Visual Impairments

A cross-disability approach to literacy, in partnership with National Braille Press.

Great Expectations, a collaboration between National Braille Press and Bridge Multimedia, brings popular picture books to life for children with visual impairments. This program uses a multi-sensory approach, combining songs, tactile play, picture descriptions, body movement, and engaged listening to promote active reading experiences.

Great Expectations also teaches parents how to describe a picture in a book, how to explore a book’s visual concepts, and how to play and have fun telling “the whole story.” Children learn to listen carefully to words, feelings (voice), actions, scene, plots, and character development-elements that they would otherwise miss by not seeing the pictures.
